llms.txt is a markdown file, published at /llms.txt on your site's root, designed to give AI assistants a concise, clean summary of your content — without having to interpret menus, popups and JavaScript the way a human visitor would.
Why you need it if your site is already readable
A real site is full of noise for an LLM: navigation, footers, cookie banners, duplicate content. llms.txt is a dedicated, concise channel: it says exactly "this is the site, this is what it does, these are the most important pages" — reducing ambiguity and the risk that the assistant forms the wrong idea from raw HTML alone.
Minimal structure

H1title with the site/brand name. - A summary line (blockquote) explaining in one sentence what the site does.
H2sections per topic area (product, docs, blog...).- Markdown links to the key pages of each section.
A common mistake
Publishing an empty or generic llms.txt ("Welcome to our site") doesn't help: worse, a low-quality file can signal to an attentive engine that the site isn't maintained. No llms.txt is better than an empty one.
